Channels now work on their own

New Channels start Autonomous. Nebula checks in on the Channel by itself, reads what the team has said and hands the next piece of work to the Channel's agents, without waiting for someone to ask.

What changed

Agents in a Channel no longer wait to be asked. A Channel you create in the desktop or mobile app now starts with Autonomous turned on. Nebula reads the Channel's purpose and what the team has said, and about every half hour it checks in: if something needs doing, it hands the work to the Channel's agents and posts what it did. If nothing needs doing, it stays quiet.

You can still turn Autonomous off when you create a Channel, or later under Channel settings, General, where you can also turn it on for a Channel you made before. Anyone who can see the Channel can change it.

How it works

  1. Create a Channel and write what it's for, for example "Ship the Northwind v2 launch on Friday: release notes, blog post and the customer email". The Autonomous switch is already on.
  2. Add the agents that do the work, like a writer, and talk in the Channel as usual.
  3. Omar posts the final pricing and Priya says the customer list is ready. Nobody asks for anything. At its next check-in Nebula sees the inputs are in and the drafts aren't started, so it posts "Pricing and feature details are locked, so Quill is drafting the v2 release notes, blog post, and customer email" and hands Quill the Task.
  4. Quill replies in the thread with all three drafts in one file, and the team picks it up from there.
  5. When someone says they'll do something by a set time, Nebula checks back when it comes due and follows up.

Nebula waits while people are talking, so it never cuts into a live conversation. It hands work to the agents already in the Channel first, and Nebula limits how many Tasks a check-in, and a day of check-ins, can start. After 3 check-ins in a row with nothing new, it waits until someone writes or a Task has new output. Autonomous is not offered in DMs or in Channels shared with another company.

Why it matters

A Channel with a purpose is a goal, and goals stall when everyone is waiting for someone else to start the next step. Now the Channel keeps itself moving: the agents pick up the work the team has already talked about, and everyone sees each step in the Channel.

Forty minutes later, with nobody asking, Nebula posts that pricing and features are locked so Quill is drafting the release notes, blog post and customer email, and Quill's reply says all three are drafted.
